Our gifts make room at the table for others.
Every Sunday, we come to Christ’s table alongside people whose stories we may not yet know.
Here are some of our voices from our pews.
Duane: From the very first service we ever attended.
Rex: Knew we might—first visit.
Who made you feel welcome here?
Duane: Mary McKnight was the first person to welcome us to Calvary during Fellowship Hour. Mary and Randy introduced us to many others. Bob and Nan Hauck and Paul and Philomina McCauley also made us feel welcome at Calvary.
Rex: Many welcoming members!
What was the moment you realized, “This is my church”?
Duane: When God answered my prayers.
Rex: When questioned about acceptance of gay people, Fr. Jason Leo said: “I believe God called me to minister to his people and if He sends anyone, I damn well better do my job.”
Tell us about a worship service or song that stayed with you all week.
Duane: One of my most memorable worship services was the dedication of the George E. Ferguson Garden and blessing of the Homeless Jesus statue. The sermon, dedication, and blessing were conducted by the Very Reverend Gail Greenwell (former Dean of Christ Church Cathedral).
Rex: Happens too many times to sort just one out.
When have you most deeply experienced God’s presence in worship?
Duane: I have experienced God’s presence in many different ways at Calvary: through a sermon or Bible reading, the beautiful music, during communion, or during a prayer.
Rex: Many times it is scripture readings.
Why does our work in the community matter to you?
Duane: Calvary is known for its outreach to others in need locally and globally (El Hogar), and Calvary individuals demonstrate Christ’s important message that we love our neighbors as ourselves.
Rex: Like Jesus, we are sent to ALL PEOPLE!
Tell us about a time you saw God’s love through one of Calvary’s ministries.
Duane: While volunteering to serve at Tender Mercies, one of the residents wanted to share his food with a homeless individual outside of the fenced area that surrounded the outdoor area.
Rex: Visited whenever sick or hospitalized.
How has Calvary shaped your family?
Duane: Many at Calvary have become “family” to us.
Rex: It is family.
Why is it important to invest in the next generation?
Duane: So that they experience Christ’s love and share that love with others.
Rex: Because they are!
What gives you hope about Calvary’s future?
Duane: Calvary has a dynamic priest and ministerial staff with congregants very willing to assist and support Calvary’s future.
Rex: Growth and innovation.
Why do you give to Calvary?
Duane: So that Calvary will be able to meet its financial obligations and expand its vision, mission, programs, services, and outreach.
Rex: Support the cause of Jesus.
What makes Calvary worth investing in?
Duane: Calvary is an important presence in Cincinnati, and the lives we touch with our time, talent, and treasure are very precious.
Rex: History and outreach.
