Hedda’s Legacy
I was doing Fall garden clean-up in the bead ground cover with trees outside the Calvary Office. I was wrestling with the many porcelain berry vines which like to invade the ground cover, take over, and strangle the trees.
When I was going back and forth using the wheelbarrow to clean up all the vines I looked up at the gorgeous blue sky. I noticed the new copper lightning protection system all over the top of the roof of the church and Calvary House: many copper spikes pointing upward.
I did not know Hedda von Goeben who died recently at age 90. I do know she made it possible for Calvary to protect the Calvary buildings with the lightening protection.
What a wonderful thing to know that she had a spiritual connection to our church for many years. I am grateful that Hedda shared her treasure with our church and all of us in such a tangible and profound way. Her gift will keep us safe from many storms to come.

What an amazing gift!
This past year the Youth Group presented their personal, insightful, heartfelt, and challenging explorations on white supremacy, sexism and identity, and the work of a Christion in the modern world. Their understandings were impressive in their personal depth, awareness, and a wider social and historic context.
They invited and challenged us to step into a new and often uncomfortable awareness.
“Don’t call people out, call them in!”
There is work to be done.

When we searched for a church home eighteen years ago, David and I prioritized a community to raise our girls that aligned with their learning style and our faith at home. We found that in Calvary’s Godly Play program, and I happily followed our children through many years of wondering as a parent and Godly Play teacher. We’re thankful for a community of faith where we celebrate triumphs and weather storms with the belief that we are better together, and everyone matters, including our Calvary children and youth.

I joined Calvary during lockdown, but it was a decision two years in the making. The outstanding music program, meaningful worship, thoughtful Christian formation, and the commitment to live with love and fearlessness makes Calvary special. And I’ve been welcomed here. Supporting those ministries with my money as well as my time and energy is a joyful way to participate in all that God calls us to do.
