Start your summer with some slowing down in color! This Sunday, June 7th, Calvary Episcopal Church’s Community Hour welcomes Melissa Bright for Illuminated Text, a hands-on session that weaves together meditation, mindfulness, and the ancient art of illuminated lettering.
Melissa Bright is joining Calvary for her second of three Community Hour appearances this summer. Each session focuses on a separate part of Mindset and Meditation through Color, Melissa brings us this programming as part of her own search for a meditative practice that worked for her, and she hopes that it will help Calvary to find more calm, peacefulness, and beauty through a practice of mindfulness.
This Sunday’s session focuses on Illuminated Text — the meditative practice of bringing words to life through color and design. You’ll choose a quote that speaks to you (a list of kindness-themed suggestions will be provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own words), then use color and pattern to illuminate it on the page. Every participant will take their finished work home!
But this isn’t just an art class. Melissa guides participants through key mindfulness concepts woven into the creative process:
- Setting aside perfect to focus on the good — releasing the inner critic so you can actually begin
- Experimenting with variations — finding a way forward that works for you, not anyone else
- Embracing surprises — turning unexpected moments into part of the journey
- Resilience – a reminder that pausing is not quitting
About Melissa Bright
Melissa is a lifelong Episcopalian, a member of Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral in Lexington, KY, and connected with Calvary through a visit with her husband Jay and her son Ralph, an engineering student at the University of Cincinnati. Her professional background is in healthcare finance, but her heart is in this work — creating space for people to find calm, beauty, and a little breathing room through color.
The June 7 session stands on its own — no prior attendance required. Come and join us! If you can’t make this session, Melissa will be back with us on July 12 for her follow-up lesson on mandalas where participants will create their own mandala design.
