Beat the Heat: Keeping Our Community Safe

Beat the Extreme Heat

With Cincinnati currently under an excessive heat warning, residents are encouraged to take extra precautions during the hottest parts of the day. Extreme heat can become dangerous quickly, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions, and anyone who spends extended time outdoors (this includes our pets!). Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, and seek air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade and remember that sidewalks, pavement, and parked vehicles can become dangerously hot.

Be alert for signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, headache, excessive sweating, muscle cramps, nausea, weakness, confusion, or fainting. Heat exhaustion can often improve with rest, hydration, and cooling down, but heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately if someone becomes confused, stops sweating, has a very high body temperature, experiences seizures, or loses consciousness. Never leave children, older adults, or pets unattended in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes, as temperatures inside can rise to life-threatening levels very quickly.

Hamilton County and the City of Cincinnati open cooling centers and designated public spaces such as libraries, recreation centers, and community facilities during periods of extreme heat. Residents who do not have reliable air conditioning should check local city and county announcements for the nearest available cooling location and transportation options. Even spending a few hours in an air-conditioned building can help lower the risk of heat-related illness.

As a congregation, one of the most meaningful things we can do is care for one another. Consider checking on elderly neighbors, relatives, people living alone, and anyone who may not have reliable air conditioning. A quick phone call, text message, or visit can provide reassurance and help ensure they have access to water, a cool place to rest, and any assistance they may need. Small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact. Let us continue to look out for one another and help keep our community safe, healthy, and connected during this period of extreme heat.
